  13. You will see a big metal box with a
  14. fan on it.  That's the power supply.
  15. It takes house current (110 volts,
  16. alternating) and steps it down to
  17. 5 and 12 volts direct current, to
  18. supply the computer's needs.
  19.    You will see the disk drives.
  20. You will also see some large
  21. printed circuit boards that plug
  22. into long sockets on an even bigger
  23. printed circuit board.  The big one
  24. is on the bottom of a standard
  25. desktop case, and on one side of
  26. tower and mini-tower cases It is
  27. called the motherboard.  The boards
  28. that plug into it are called

  33.     The motherboard contains the most
  34. essential parts of a computer, the
  35. Central Processing Unit, called CPU,
  36. the RAM and ROM memory, and an
  37. assortment of other important parts.

  39. circuits for "accessories" such as
  40. your monitor, disk drives, and
  41. options you might have such as a
  42. mouse or modem.
